What is The Salmon Master Institute?

The SMI is a collection of top charter captains and tournament pro's that present seminars throughout the day designed to help make you a better fisherman.  They pass along their collective decades of experience on the water to help you, find fish, determine productive baits/colors and patterns, expose you to using new/varied/unique tackle, elaborate on species specifics habits/tendencies/traits, and much more.

In short, it is a full day of learning more about your quarry and how to pursue them.  Each school will have 4 speakers that will present two seminars each, for a total of eight seminars.  At the end of the day, the speakers will remain for a panel question and answer session.

What is the Itinerary for the day?

  • 7:00am - Registration opens with continental breakfast being available to all the attendee's.
  • 8:00am - Noon - 4 Seminars, 1 by each speaker
  • Noon - 1:00pm - Lunch
  • 1:00pm - 4:00pm - 4 Seminars, 1 by each speaker
  • 4:00pm to Close - Question and answer session with the complete speaker panel

What Can I Expect?

You can rightfully expect a day that will load, and in some cases, overload your senses with information.  You'll be able to meet and network with other fisherman that ply the same waters as you, thereby increasing your knowledge base for future excursions.  You'll have access to and mingle with some of the great minds in fishing today.  Our goal is to give you a little more than you can handle, and thereby provide a worthwhile and highly valuable service for you.
The SMI will provide you with a continental breakfast, and then coffee, soda and water will be available to you at no charge throughout the day.

Is this for experts or novices?

The simple answer to this is…yes.  It is for everyone.  The reality is, that if you are a brand new fisherman to our Great Lakes, you probably need lots of help.  While some of the seminars may be over your level of comprehension at this point, there will still be more than enough that you'll grasp onto to put you light years down the learning curve.  If you are an expert fisherman, quite simply put, there is less available for you to learn from.  That being said, as an expert, just picking up a few "choice nuggets" of wisdom, that previously weren't available, can make the whole day worthwile.  Even our speakers love to sit in on the other speakers presentations to see if they can pick something up.

The answer is, that no matter what level you consider yourself at, we can increase the knowledge of any open mind.

If I went to a Salmon Master Institute in the past, will there be something new for me?

ABSOLUTELY!!!  Each year, The Salmon Master Institute puts together a speaker lineup and topics that are completely new.  You will not ever see the same presentation that you have seen in the past.

There needs to be a constant (floating or sidebar?) link showing that says "click here to register"…that leads to a page that has links saying….

Who Are The Speakers?

Speakers can change from location to location.  We try and customize each SMI to fit the local geographic area and bring the most relevant program.  That being said, we also try and mix in outside the area speakers to bring in fresh perspectives from an expert viewpoint.  In the past, SMI's have had such notable speakers as, Capt. Chip Porter, Dave Mull editor of Great Lakes Angler Magazine, Capt.s Dave Engle & Bill Bale of Best Chance, Capt. Carl "Fuzzy Bear" Stopczynki, Capt. Ernie "The Fish Doctor" Lantiegne, Capt. Dan Keating, Capt. Arnie "The Chief" Arradondo, Capt. Dave Scott, Capt. Tim Dawidiuk.

What are the topics?

Because the speakers change based on locations, topics also change.  You can expect to hear about Species specific techniques and tactics, new angles on old thinking, how to find and catch specific species, new tackle/gadgets, how to properly employ tackle and electronics to make you more productive, and to have any questions that you may have answered by some of the top minds in the business.
